Thematic Sector

The Organization of People in Need (OPN) designs and implements its programs across six major thematic sectors that reflect both urgent humanitarian needs and long-term community development priorities. Each sector integrates cross-cutting themes of accountability, inclusion, protection, and gender sensitivity, ensuring that all interventions are people-centered, conflict-sensitive, and sustainable.

Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL)

Afghanistan faces widespread food insecurity due to protracted conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability. OPN’s FSL interventions aim to restore livelihoods, reduce hunger, and build community resilience.
Key focus areas include:
Emergency food assistance to crisis-affected households.
Food-for-Assets and Cash-for-Work initiatives that link relief to recovery.
Vocational and skills training for youth and women to enhance employability.
Support to smallholder farmers through improved inputs, irrigation, and market linkages.
Promotion of home-based and small-scale business opportunities for vulnerable families.
Through these programs, OPN contributes to both immediate food security and long-term economic empowerment, helping families transition from dependency to self-reliance.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Access to safe water and sanitation remains a major public health challenge in many Afghan communities. OPN’s WASH programs focus on ensuring clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene promotion in both schools and communities.
Key focus areas include:
Construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems and hand pumps.
Promotion of hygiene awareness to prevent water-borne diseases.
Distribution of hygiene kits to vulnerable families and students.
Support for school-based WASH initiatives that improve attendance and hygiene practices among children.
Collaboration with community shuras to promote long-term water management and maintenance systems.
These initiatives not only protect health but also enhance dignity, reduce disease, and contribute to community resilience.

Education

Education is a cornerstone of social progress and recovery. OPN supports access to inclusive and quality education, especially for children in remote or crisis-affected areas where access remains limited.
Key focus areas include:
Provision of school kits, hygiene materials, and awareness sessions for students and teachers.
Advocacy for girls’ education and community engagement to reduce barriers to learning.
Community-based education support where formal schooling is unavailable.
Coordination with education authorities and humanitarian partners to strengthen local education systems.
OPN’s approach promotes not only learning but also child protection, hygiene, and psychosocial well-being, ensuring that schools remain safe and supportive spaces for all children.

Protection

Protection lies at the heart of OPN’s humanitarian action. The organization works to safeguard the rights, dignity, and safety of vulnerable individuals, particularly women, children, and persons with disabilities.
Key focus areas include:
Community-based protection mechanisms that identify and respond to protection risks.
Awareness campaigns on child rights, gender equity, and social inclusion.
Capacity-building for communities to prevent exploitation, abuse, and neglect.
Referral pathways and collaboration with protection partners to support survivors and at-risk individuals.
Integration of protection and accountability principles across all OPN programs.
Through these efforts, OPN fosters safer, more inclusive communities where every individual is valued and protected.

Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items (ESNFI)

Displacement, natural disasters, and harsh weather leave thousands of Afghan families without shelter or basic household essentials each year. OPN provides life-saving ESNFI support to help families restore safety and stability.
Key focus areas include:
Distribution of emergency shelter materials and non-food item kits to IDPs and disaster-affected populations.
Winterization support through blankets, heating materials, and warm clothing.
Coordination with local authorities and humanitarian clusters to ensure effective targeting and delivery.
Support for transitional shelter and basic household rehabilitation.

OPN’s ESNFI assistance ensures immediate relief and supports the recovery of families affected by crises, enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity.

Health

Health awareness and preventive care are critical to improving quality of life in Afghanistan, particularly in rural and under-served areas. OPN integrates health education and awareness into its community programming.
Key focus areas include:
Public health and hygiene awareness campaigns to prevent communicable diseases.
COVID-19 prevention and vaccination awareness among women and youth.
Collaboration with community health workers to promote maternal and child health.
Nutrition education for households to prevent malnutrition and improve dietary practices.
Support to school health and hygiene initiatives.
By combining awareness, education, and community mobilization, OPN contributes to improved public health outcomes and supports communities in building healthier, more resilient lives.
